| Saturday, 10 May 2008 The Queensland Firebirds have staked their claim as genuine ANZ netball championship contenders with a sizeable 66-52 victory over the NSW Swifts at the Brisbane Convention Centre. Romelda Aiken was again dominant at goal shooter for Queensland, dazzling the crowd of 2,334 with a staggering 58 goals (97 per cent) to break her own record of 48 for most goals in a match this season. After the Swifts controlled the tempo early, the Firebirds hit the front for the first time in the game just before halftime, heading into the main break with a 30-29 lead. The home side never looked back, boosting that lead to 48-40 at three-quarter time before a stellar final quarter ensured they would claim a historic victory, their first over state of origin rivals the Swifts since the inception of the National Netball League. |
