The Mikado bounces back

Trainer Tim Martin put aside the disappointment of The Mikado being scratched at the barrier in Canberra last Sunday by preparing the colt to win the Listed Strada Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

The Mikado ($8.50) was scratched at the gates prior to the Canberra Guineas (1400m), won by Al Dhafra, but bounced back and showed a strong turn of foot to claim the Strada Stakes by 1-3/4 lengths over Zingaling ($8) with Hus Der Lieften ($17) third.

"He's always shown a lot of ability and I was always confident going into today until the rain came before the race," Martin said.

"It was a great ride and there was a good fast pace which he needs."

Tye Angland, who rode the winner, said he was left a little surprised by how well The Mikado attacked the line after settling back in the field.

"It was a super performance," Angland said.

"He actually surprised me how quickly he sprinted. I was off the bit early out of the gates but then I got into a good position following Damien Oliver (on Hus Der Lieften).

"He carted me into the race and then that horse went out and I went back to the inside and the run came for me."

Martin said The Mikado would likely head towards the Group Three South Pacific Classic (1400m) at Randwick on April 17.
