Sprint double target for Dare

By Russell Jackson

A slashing last start run in the All-Aged Stakes has convinced trainer Chris Waller to expand the Brisbane winter campaign for his exciting grey Double Dare.

The Rosehill trainer has the stakeswinner nominated for the Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in two weeks and also next month's the Stradbroke Handicap but said the original plan was only to run in the latter.

That plan went out the window after Double Dare charged home from the back of the field to run an eye-catching fourth to star galloper Racing To Win in the Group One All-Aged Stakes at Randwick next Saturday.

"After that run we decided to give him a crack at the Doomben 10,000 as well," Waller said.

"I was planning on just running him in the Stradbroke but he hit the line so strongly in the All-Aged I think he's booked himself a crack at the 10,000 too."

Waller has spaced Double Dare's runs this campaign and the six-year-old is thriving.

Double Dare defeated the highly rated He's Canny at Rosehill on March 15, racing first-up from a 43-week spell extended by the equine influenza outbreak.

"We gave him a let-up and then a couple of trials before the All-Aged and he's going really well for us, I couldn't be happier with him," Waller said.

The O'Reilly gelding scored his biggest win when he defeated King Rex in the Maurice McCarten Stakes at Rosehill on Golden Slipper day last year.

It proved to be a big day for Waller, who celebrated his first black-type double after Mr Ubiquitous also won the Royal Parma Stakes.

Waller won his first Group One race when Triple Honour took out the Doncaster Handicap at Randwick on April 26 and is poised to expand his stable next season as he takes over the training of the yearlings Bob Ingham bought at the recent Easter sale.

Ingham sold his Woodlands Stud breeding and racing empire to Darley a few weeks ago and bought more than 20 horses at the sale to race in a small way with his family.
