Thompson aiming at Brisbane Group One

By Mandy Cottell

Robert Thompson recently ended a 13-year hiatus from the Group One winner's stall in Sydney but that effort will pale into insignificance if he can add to his tally during the Brisbane winter carnival.

The popular jockey took out this year's Arrowfield Stud Stakes-AJC Australian Oaks double aboard the Allan Denham-trained Heavenly Glow to give him his first Group One success in Sydney since his 1995 Canterbury Guineas triumph aboard Sharscay.

But it has been much longer since Thompson experienced victory at the elite level in Queensland.

"I have ridden a Group One winner in Brisbane but it was a long time ago," Thompson said.

"It was on a horse called Romantic Dream. I won the two-year-old features, the Sires' Produce and the race now known as the TJ Smith.

"It would have been in the 1970s, before Luskin Star."

Luskin Star won the QTC Sires' Produce and Castlemaine Stakes (now TJ Smith) in 1977, a year after Thompson was successful aboard Romantic Dream.

The veteran hoop, who lives at Cessnock in the NSW Hunter Valley and has declined all attempts to lure him to Sydney full time, has arguably his best chance yet to break his Brisbane drought this winter.

Heavenly Glow will leave Denham's Sydney base this week on a Queensland Oaks mission and Thompson will maintain the mount.

She is already the $3.80 favourite for the 2400m classic with TAB Sportsbet despite the race still being three weeks away.

The filly is due to have her final Oaks lead-up in Saturday's Group Three Doomben Roses (2020m).

"I believe she pulled up very well from the (AJC) Oaks and she's heading up to Brisbane early in the week," Thompson said.

"She will run in the Doomben Roses on Saturday.

"Allan is tickled pink with her and we're looking forward to Brisbane with her now."

Thompson is one of the most well-travelled jockeys in the country and is less than 30 wins away from claiming the record held by the late Jack Thompson (no relation) for the most number of winners, which stands at 3,322.

He has several key rides beckoning over the winter carnival and says he will be riding in Brisbane for the next few Saturdays at least.

"We'll see how things work out but at this stage I seem to be riding The Jackal one week and then Heavenly Glow the next week so all of this month at least I'll be riding up there pretty much every Saturday," he said.

The Jackal finished two lengths fifth in Saturday's Group One BTC Cup won by Apache Cat and is among entries for the Doomben 10,000 on May 24 and the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm on June 7.

The Queensland Oaks is at Eagle Farm on May 31 and it could be an auspicious afternoon for Thompson - the race is run on the same day as the Sires' Produce he won 32-years ago aboard Romantic Dream.
