| Saturday, 10 May 2008 By Russell Jackson Royal Discretion will be aimed towards next month's Group Two Queensland Guineas after his dominant victory in the Hawkesbury Guineas in front of a record crowd of 13,627. The Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding, who started the $2.40 favourite, defeated the fast-finishing Turffontein by 1-1/4 lengths with Acey Ducey 1-3/4 lengths away third in the 1400m race. Waterhouse celebrated her second Guineas victory following Roadagain four years ago and she also notched a feature race double after Rabbuka won the $100,000 Rowley Mile. "It's amazing to come here, away from our home track and win two of these feature races, I'm so happy with the team, and it's a credit to our horses, they've done so well," Waterhouse said. "And he (Royal Discretion) was just brilliant, he's just matured mentally and physically and will head to Brisbane now," Waterhouse said. "It's been a great day and it's a credit to the club for putting it on." Winning jockey Nash Rawiller said he was happy to give the lead up at the halfway mark to stakeswinner Tenant's Tiara. "I was more than happy to let the filly cross and I was never concerned at any point, he travelled beautifully and it was a credit to his toughness to see him fight the way he did," Rawiller said. "He's a very nice horse and has strung together a couple of nice wins now and will go Brisbane in good form." Hawkesbury Race Club chief executive Brian Fletcher was delighted with the crowd and praised the efforts of his staff. "It's been a great success, we've put a lot of hard work into this and it's nice that everything's gone so well," Fletcher said. The meeting at the provincial track north west of Sydney is the only NSW Saturday meeting outside the metropolitan area which offers city prizemoney. Peter Snowden celebrated a winning treble when Sung claimed the Woodlands Crown (1300m) at what was probably her last start for the Ingham family with approval of the sale of the Woodlands empire to Darley imminent. Stablemate and talented youngster, Fravashi opened the account for Snowden in the first race of the day before Hike took the honours in the Blakes Marine Handicap (1600m). Snowden has big plans for Sung who will be aimed towards some major races during the Brisbane winter carnival including the Group One Winter Stakes on June 21 at Eagle Farm. |
