| Saturday, 10 May 2008 Apache Cat won the Group One BTC Cup at Doomben after a tough struggle with Vormista down the straight. With Corey Brown riding hard, Victorian Apache Cat got the better of the Adelaide mare on the line with local hope Swiss Ace third. It was the fourth successive Group One victory for the Greg Eurell-trained Apache Cat whose white face has earned him a cult following. His record this year has also earned him favouritism for the title of this season's champion sprinter. Eurell admitted he had been a bit nervous that the odds-on favourite would not get there in time. "He gave us a bit of an anxious moment but ut's typical of how he fights," Eurell said. "He will appreciate going up in distance now to the Doomben 10,000." The 1200m BTC Cup was the first of the Group One races of the Queensland winter carnival with the Doomben 10,000 (1350m) to be run in two weeks,. |
