International Group 1 winners - Week ending July 19 FRANCE 14/7...GRAND PRIX DE PARIS (G1) LONGCHAMP 2400M 1. CAVALRYMAN (GB) 3c Halling--Silversword by Highest Honor O-Sheikh Mohammed; B-Darley; T-Andre Fabre 2. Age of Aquarius (Ire) 3c Galileo - Clara Bow by Top Ville 3. Mastery (GB) 3c Sulamani - Moyesii by Diesis The Andre Fabre trained Cavalryman made it a Bastille Day tor remember for the French when he swooped by Mastery approaching the furlong pole for a smooth success at Longchamp. He gave young rider Maxime Guyon, who had been in the saddle when the bay captured the Prix Matchem at Saint-Cloud last month, a Group 1 to remember. "This is a special moment and I have to thank Sheikh Mohammed and Andre Fabre for letting me ride such good horses," the 20-year-old jockey said. "I felt some pressure when the others came at me, but he had a lot left in the tank." "He is a nice horse and, like most Hallings, he is improving with time, and his quality and form are coming at the right time," Fabre remarked. "It is a most satisfactory result, and I will now talk to Sheikh Mohammed and discuss his future." Cavalryman was runner-up to stablemate and fellow Halling colt Cutlass Bay in the Prix Greffulhe (G2) at Saint-Cloud in May and then won the Prix Matchem by six lengths at the same venue on June 1. The Grand Prix de Paris is regarded by purists as France's true 'Derby' since it was revamped to 2400m in 2004. Fabre completed the Grand Prix de Paris - Arc double with Juddmonte Farms homebred Rail Link (Dansili) in 2005. SOUTH AFRICA 19/7...MERCURY SPRINT (G1) CLAIRWOOD 1200M 1. OUR GIANT (Aus) 5h Giant's Causeway--Macrosa by Mcginty O-M & I Jooste; B-D Fleming; T-C Laird 2. Sharks Bay (Aus) 3g Canny Lad--Pyramisa, by Marauding 3. Extinct 5g Spaceship--Endangered Species, by Sapieha Our Giant captured a second Group 1 for Australian bred horses in South Africa this month when he won the Mercury Sprint by four lengths at Clairwood on Sunday. Our Giant and Sharks Bay filled out the quinella for Australia in the Sprint which is South Africa's top weight-for-age sprint of the season. It completed a G1 double for his dam Macrosa who has also thrown Singapore star Rocket Man (Viscount). Both horses were bred by Tyreel Stud's Dean Fleming. Our Giant bounced back to form over 1200m after running out of puff when seventh to Big City Life in the Durban July (2200m). Australia's other G1 winner in South Africa this month was on July day when Musir (Redoute's Choice) won the Golden Horseshoe for owner-breeder Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum. Our Giant has been most consistent at black-type level. He had been runner-up to South African legend Pocket Power in the 2008 J&B Met (G1) and the 2009 Queen's Plate. Laird plans another crack at the Queen's Plate next season for Our Giant. "He's a good horse, and good horses do rise to the occasion," Laird said. The Mercury Sprint was a G1 triumph for Magic Millions. He was purchased by trainer Charles Laird for $480,000 from the draft of Tyreel Thoroughbred Stud at the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast. Sharks Bay is also proving a great money spinner for his connections. He was purchased for $80,000 at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and has won four races including the G2 Post Merchants at Greyville. GERMANY 19/7...DEUTSCHLAND PREIS (G1) DUSSELDORF 2400M 1. GETAWAY 6h Monsun - Guernica by Unfuwain O/B-Baron Georg von Ullmann; T-Jens Hirschberger 2. Flamingo Fantasy 4c Fantastic Light--Flamingo Road by Acatenango 3. Appel au Maitre (Fr) 5h Starborough - Rotina by Crystal Glitters Baron Georg von Ullmann's homebred Getaway rallied between opponents in the straight to win his first race in more than 11 months in this G1 at Dusseldorf. He had won at G2 level in 2008 when landing the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket and the Grand Prix de Deauville when trained by Andre Fabre. The six-year-old Monsun horse had his first start for trainer Jens Hirschberger when runner-up to Flamingo Fantasy in the Hansa Preis (G2) at Hamburg last month. Hirschberger said Getaway will run in the Grosser Preis von Baden (G1) in September on the way to the Arc de Triomphe (G1). He was unplaced in the Longchamp championship last year. Getaway is a full brother to 2002 Italian Oaks (G1) winner Guadalupe and a half-brother to English stakes winner Guadalajara (Acatenango). - Thoroughbred Express
